Screen Recording Best Practices

Screen recordings power tutorials, product demos, bug reports, and documentation. Quality depends on resolution, frame rate, audio, and the preparation you do before hitting record.

Pre-Recording Setup

Clean your desktop: close unrelated applications, hide bookmarks bar, remove personal files from view. Set your display resolution to 1920×1080 for maximum compatibility — higher resolutions produce larger files and may be downscaled by platforms. Increase font size and cursor size for readability. Disable notifications to prevent popups during recording.

Recording Settings

30fps is sufficient for UI demonstrations. 60fps for smooth motion (scrolling, animations, drag operations). Record system audio if demonstrating audio-visual content, microphone audio for narration, or both. Use a hardware encoder (NVENC, Quick Sync, M1/M2 Media Engine) to avoid CPU strain during recording, which can cause frame drops.

Audio Quality

Use an external microphone — built-in laptop microphones capture too much keyboard noise and room echo. Position the microphone 15-20cm from your mouth. Record in a quiet environment. Monitor audio levels during recording to catch clipping early. Record audio and screen separately if possible — this allows independent editing and retry of narration without re-recording the screen.

Post-Production Essentials

Trim dead air at the beginning and end. Speed up slow operations (loading screens, typing) to 2-4× speed. Add zoom effects on small UI elements that are hard to see at full-screen view. Include captions for accessibility and for viewers watching without sound (over 80% of social media video is watched muted).

Output Format and Delivery

Export as H.264 MP4 for maximum compatibility. For short clips (under 30 seconds), GIF or WebM may be more convenient for embedding in documentation. For YouTube/Vimeo, upload the highest quality version and let the platform handle transcoding. For embedding in presentations, compress to a reasonable file size to avoid bloating the presentation file.
