Technical Details
PDF is built on a PostScript-derived imaging model that describes pages as collections of objects — text, paths, images, and annotations. Content streams use Flate (zlib) or JPEG compression, and the cross-reference table enables random access to any page without reading the entire file.
History
Adobe co-founder John Warnock launched the Camelot project in 1991 to create a paperless office format. PDF 1.0 was released in 1993, and the specification became an open ISO standard (ISO 32000) in 2008.
